Coventry houses to benefit from heat pumps

Ground source heat pumps are being used in a new housing regeneration project in Coventry, with the aim of reducing carbon emissions while saving residents money on heating costs.

According to Midlands Housing's website, the 13 bungalows at the Liberty Park estate will each have their own pump installed, obtaining heat from bore-holes below the ground.

Michael Park, development manager at Whitefriars Housing Group, cited figures from Age Concern which indicate that around one in four people living in fuel poverty are older individuals.

"The [heat pump] system will bring many benefits to our tenants, not least a cost saving, and this fits perfectly with our ongoing work to reduce fuel poverty," he added.

Eco-friendly heat pumps - manufactured by leading heating professionals including Worcester, Trianco and Grundfos - work by using renewable energy stored in the ground to provide home heating and hot water.

They are believed to reduce running costs by up to 70 per cent compared to burning oil or gas.
